Cutting out sugar isn’t just another fad. Here’s how to get the whole family on board.

However great the white stuff might taste, we all know that too much of it isn’t good for you. With research coming out left, right and centre, it’s no wonder that families are starting to make the choice to go almost completely refined sugar free, and are looking for healthier options. If you’re one of those families, but you’ve no idea where to start, we’ve broken it down into some simple steps that you can take, to help the whole family give up sugar for good.

  1. Do the research together

What’s really important when making a big lifestyle change like giving up sugar, is knowing why you’re doing it. Do the research – and do it as a family. Learning together can be an enlightening and enjoyable experience. Plus, the kids won’t feel like parents are “nagging” them about their sugar intake, as they will have seen the research themselves. Decide why as a family you want to make this change, and commit to doing it together.

  1. Identify your biggest sugar hits – where you’re going wrong

The next step is to identify where you’re going wrong. Look at the foods that you’re currently consuming, individually and as a family. Look at their sugar content, talk about it, and take time to compare and contrast different food products that your family regularly consumes. It might surprise you to find out that Mum’s daily granola bar fix has more sugar than Dad’s milkshake crutch, and that together they’re consuming more sugar than the kids! But that’s just a possibility. Really get into your food to see where your biggest sugar hits are – it can be very eye-opening!

  1. Swap them out for healthier snacks

Now that you know where you’re going wrong, find ways to make them right. Choose particular, healthier snacks that will replace the sugary ones you’re committing to cutting out. Maybe it’s switching flavoured yoghurt for plain, or fizzy drinks for infused water, or granola bars for whole fruit – whatever it is, make a plan as to what snacks will replace what, so that when you feel the cravings rise, you know exactly what you’re going to eat instead.

  1. Get fun with fruit

Sometimes it can be really tough to convince your kids to eat their fruits and veggies. So, get fun with them! Let the kids come shopping with you and choose their favourite fruit and veg, and use the trip to introduce them to new kids in a neutral environment. And don’t be afraid to try anything new and exotic too! All different fruits and veggies have different vitamins and minerals to offer, and their all delicious when you know how to prepare them!

Let your kids help prepare them, whether it’s chopping and cutting, or simply washing and wrapping them. For little kids, you could try chopping them into fun shapes or things that are familiar to them, and enjoy them together so that they can see how delicious they are!

  1. Redefine your treats

Life is dull without a few treats here and there, but when you’ve decided to quit sugar, it’s time to redefine what your treats are. It can be really fun to create healthy treats together, having the kids help mix and shape and bake.

There are some great sugar-free alternatives to different drinks and desserts out there too. Like Fangks; if your kids – or you! – like flavoured milk, then they will love Fangks, and will hardly realise the difference. Fangks is sweetened with Natvia, a 100% natural, organic sweetener, and with a choice of chocolate or strawberry, no one will be disappointed on flavour. Kids can have fun mixing it up, and it can be enjoyed as a treat for the whole family too!

  1. Live a better life!

So now that you have your plan, all that’s left to do is carry it out – a live a better life, free of sugar and the hold it has on you! Quitting sugar really isn’t just a fad, it’s a choice to live a better, healthier life for the whole family. And once you’ve gone sugar-free, you’ll never go back!
